Delivery Driver Envelope Budget Template
Treat app payouts as revenue, not income. This template routes every payout through 10 envelopes and takes the cost of driving out first: 12% fuel, 8% maintenance and tires, 6% insurance and registration, 3% phone, and a tax set-aside you choose with a preparer. What remains funds rent, groceries, a slow-week buffer, and personal spending as a fixed weekly wage you pay yourself.

A payout is revenue, not a paycheck
The number the app shows you is gross revenue from a small business that happens to be one person and one car. Before any of it is yours, it has to cover fuel, the wear you just put on tires and brakes, the phone plan, the insurance that makes the driving legal, and money owed at tax time. Drivers who skip this step feel fine for about four months and then meet a set of tires and a tax bill in the same quarter. This template makes the deduction explicit: five envelopes take the cost of driving off the top, and only what survives that is treated as income.
Instant payouts go to a holding pool first
Cashing out after every shift feels like control and behaves like the opposite, because money that arrives twenty times a month gets spent twenty times. Send every payout into a single holding envelope and leave it there. Once a week, on a day you pick and keep, run the whole pool through the percentages: cost of driving out first, then a fixed weekly wage into the living envelopes. A big Saturday does not raise your wage and a rained-out Tuesday does not lower it. The holding pool absorbs the difference, and the rent envelope never learns what kind of week you had.
Set the maintenance number from your own miles
Nobody can tell you what your car costs per mile, because it depends on the vehicle, its age, how you drive, and what a shop charges where you live. Build the figure yourself. Add up what you actually spent on the car over the last twelve months, including tires, oil, brakes, and the surprise repair, then divide by the miles you logged in that period. That gives you a per-mile cost you can defend. Multiply it by the miles you drive each week and fill the maintenance envelope by that amount, every week, before you count anything as earnings. Recalculate once a year.
Taxes: set a percentage, then never look at it
Self-employment changes what you owe and how you pay it, and the right percentage depends on your total income, your deductions, your mileage records, and your household situation. That is a conversation with a tax preparer, not a number to copy off a budgeting page. The 15% in this template is a placeholder so the percentages add to 100. Replace it with a figure someone qualified gave you, put it in its own envelope, and treat that envelope as though the money already left. If you finish the year having over-reserved, that is a far better problem than the alternative.
The change to make this week
Stop cashing out after every shift. Pick one payout day, create the holding envelope today, and let this week's earnings pile up in it untouched. On your chosen day, do one sitting: fuel, maintenance, insurance, phone, and tax set-aside come out, then pay yourself the same wage you paid yourself last week. In Envelope Budget you log each fill by hand, which takes a couple of minutes and makes the split real rather than theoretical. If your weekly wage is currently unknowable, use the lowest full week you can remember as the starting number and raise it only after the buffer envelope is funded.
Common questions
How much of a DoorDash payout should I keep as actual income?
Whatever is left after fuel, per-mile vehicle cost, insurance, phone, and your tax set-aside come out. In this template those five envelopes take 44% of payouts, but your number will differ because your vehicle, market, and tax situation differ. Calculate your own per-mile cost from last year's repair receipts and mileage, get your tax percentage from a preparer, and rebuild the split. The exercise matters more than the specific figure, because it turns a payout screen into an honest wage.
Should I budget by the week or by the month?
Fund living envelopes weekly and pay bills monthly. Gig income arrives in small frequent pieces, so a weekly fill matches the rhythm of the money and gives you a decision point four or five times a month instead of one. Monthly targets still set the size of each envelope: divide the monthly target by four and fill that amount every payout day. The slow-week buffer is what lets you keep the weekly amount identical even when the earnings behind it were not.
What if a repair empties the maintenance envelope?
That is the envelope doing its job, and it is the reason it exists. Pay the repair, then raise the weekly maintenance fill until the envelope is back at its target, and take the increase from Fun and Personal rather than from Rent or the tax set-aside. If repairs repeatedly outrun the envelope, your per-mile number is too low or the vehicle is at the point where replacement math is worth running. Either way, the envelope told you something useful before the credit card did.
