How to Save Money on Heating This Winter
Heating cost is run hours multiplied by the price of your fuel, so the levers that matter cut run hours: a wider thermostat band, sealing the air leaks that make the house feel cold at a normal setpoint, a clean filter, and a lower water heater temperature. Insulation and window replacement are capital projects with long paybacks, not monthly tricks. Add last winter's heating bills, divide by twelve, and fund a Heating envelope every month of the year, including July.
Thermostat: the band, not the number
Your furnace, boiler, or heat pump costs money only while it runs, and it runs to replace heat the house loses. So there are two ways to cut the bill: ask for less heat, or lose heat more slowly. Start with the first by setting a schedule rather than a temperature. The savings come from hours at a lower setpoint, so attack the overnight block and the hours nobody is home. One caveat matters: if you heat with a heat pump that has electric resistance backup, a deep setback can call in the backup strips on recovery and cost more than it saved, so use a shallower setback or a thermostat that recovers gradually. Also check that the blower is not set to run continuously.
Air sealing beats insulation for the first hundred dollars
Cold rooms and a furnace that never catches up are usually an air problem before an insulation problem. The paths are predictable: the gap under an exterior door, the perimeter of window trim, the rim joist in the basement, plumbing and wiring penetrations, an unsealed attic hatch, and a fireplace damper left open. Caulk, weatherstripping, foam gaskets behind exterior outlet covers, and a hatch cover are cheap, and they cut the volume of heated air escaping every hour the system runs. This is also the honest place to say that adding attic insulation or replacing windows is capital spending with a multi-year payback. Do it because the house needs it, budget it as a project, and do not expect it to rescue this winter.
Maintenance, hot water, and space heater math
A clogged filter makes the blower fight restriction and can shorten equipment life, so change it on a schedule you can actually keep. Bleed radiators if you have them, keep supply vents clear of furniture, and have combustion equipment serviced for safety reasons regardless of savings. Lower the water heater tank temperature, because winter incoming water is colder and the tank reheats more. As for space heaters, the arithmetic is simple and often misunderstood: an electric heater converts electricity to heat at roughly one to one, so heating one occupied room while turning the whole house down can win, and running one alongside normal heating always loses. Never run one unattended or on an extension cord.
What gets recommended and barely moves the number
Closing vents in unused rooms of a ducted system raises static pressure and can reduce efficiency rather than improve it. Plastic film helps a drafty single-pane window and does close to nothing on a decent double pane. Ceiling fan reversal is a comfort tweak in a room with high ceilings, not a line item. Turning the heat completely off during a workday risks a long, expensive recovery and, if you go far enough down, frozen pipes. And a smart thermostat changes nothing on its own if you already ran a sensible schedule. Judge each idea by whether it reduces run hours or reduces heat loss. If it does neither, it is decoration.

Fund that amount every single month, including the months you are running air conditioning. By the time the first cold bill arrives, the envelope already holds most of the season. Common questions
Is it cheaper to leave the heat at one temperature all day?
For conventional furnaces and boilers, no. The system runs to replace heat lost to the outdoors, and a cooler house loses heat more slowly, so hours spent at a lower setpoint reduce total run time even after recovery. The real exception is a heat pump with electric backup, where a large setback can trigger resistance heating on the way back up. If that is your system, use a smaller setback of a couple of degrees or a thermostat with adaptive recovery, and watch your daily usage for a week after changing anything.
Do space heaters save money?
Only in one specific arrangement. An electric space heater turns electricity into heat at close to one to one, so it is not efficient in any special sense. It can save money when it heats the single room you occupy while the central system is turned down for the whole house, because you are heating less volume. It costs money when it runs alongside normal whole-house heating, or when several run in different rooms. Safety limits apply regardless: plug directly into a wall outlet, keep clearance, and never leave one running unattended.
How do I budget for heating when the bills only come in winter?
Convert the season into a monthly number. Add every heating bill from last season, divide by twelve, and fund a Heating envelope with that amount every month of the year including summer.
