Envelope Budget vs YNAB

YNAB and envelope budgeting run on the same rule, so this is not a method argument: it is a tooling argument. YNAB is a paid subscription that runs on iPhone, Android and the web and can import transactions from linked accounts. Envelope Budget is iPhone-only, has no bank connection at all, and requires you to log each purchase yourself.

Same method, different machinery

We make Envelope Budget, so treat this as an interested party's comparison. Here is the part we will not spin: YNAB and envelope budgeting are built on the same idea. You take the money you actually have, give every dollar a job before you spend it, and when one job runs out of money you move dollars from another job rather than pretending it did not happen. If you already believe in that idea, switching between the two is not a change of philosophy. What changes is the machinery around it. YNAB is a subscription platform with apps on iPhone, Android and the web, and it can pull transactions in from accounts you link. We are one app on one platform with no connection to your bank, which means nothing arrives on its own.

Where YNAB is the better tool

Pick YNAB if any of these are true. You want your budget on more than one device, or you do your real thinking on a laptop rather than a phone. You share a household with someone on Android, or with someone who needs their own login into the same plan. You want transactions imported so the annual renewals and the forgotten charges show up without you remembering them. You want the depth of a mature system, with years of teaching material, workshops and a large community that will answer a question at eleven at night. None of that is available from us. We are a single iPhone app, and manual entry across six cards is genuinely tedious. A tedious system is a system you abandon, so be honest with yourself about how many cards you actually use.

Where we are the better tool

Pick us for narrower reasons. You want the assign-first rule without handing banking credentials to anything, and we never ask for them because we cannot import even if you wanted us to. You want a purchase option that ends, rather than a plan that renews forever. You tried YNAB, agreed with the method, and found the interface heavier than the problem you were solving. Or your problem is specifically the moment of paying, not the month-end review: our home-screen and lock-screen widget puts an envelope balance where you will actually see it before you tap your card, and the Live Activity keeps it there while you are out. That is the whole bet. If your problem is reporting rather than restraint, it is the wrong bet.

Rebuilding a lapsed YNAB plan as envelopes

If you fell off YNAB and want to start again here, you do not need to relearn anything. The rule about giving every dollar a job is what our assign screen does: your take-home pay lands in an Available pool and you push it into envelopes until the pool is empty. Planning for the large irregular expenses is a set of sinking-fund envelopes you fund a twelfth at a time. Moving money when you overspend is literally a transfer between two envelopes here, and we treat it as normal rather than as a failure. Building a buffer so you are spending money you earned a while ago is one envelope named Buffer that you keep feeding. Copy your old category names in, cut the ones you never used, and stop at ten.

What each costs

We will not quote YNAB's price, because prices move and a stale number on a comparison page is a lie with a timestamp. It is a recurring subscription; check their current pricing on their own site before you decide, and take the free trial. Current Plus pricing lives on our comparison page rather than here, so it cannot go stale in a page nobody remembers to update; the App Store listing is always authoritative. Those are the only prices, with no separate unlocks or add-on purchases. The lifetime option exists because some people would rather pay once for a tool that does one job than rent it indefinitely. If you would rather rent something that keeps growing, that is an argument for the subscription, not against it.

Common questions

Is YNAB just a digital envelope system?

Close enough that the distinction rarely matters in practice. Both start from money you already have, both require you to assign it before you spend, and both expect you to move money between categories instead of quitting when you overspend. YNAB adds account reconciliation and imported transactions on top, which makes it a fuller bookkeeping system as well as a budget. If you learned the method there, you already know how to use an envelope app; the categories become envelopes and the assign screen does the same job.

Can I import my YNAB budget into Envelope Budget?

No. There is no import path, and we are not going to pretend one is coming. What you can do in about ten minutes is open your old category list, retype the names that actually held money, and skip the rest. Most people find they had twenty categories and used seven. Set an amount on each envelope for this month only, not a permanent plan, and correct it after your first full month of logging. Starting smaller is a feature, not a compromise.

Why would I choose an app with no bank sync?

Two reasons, and neither applies to everyone. First, nothing is connected, so no banking credentials leave your phone for our servers; if that is a hard requirement for you, syncing apps are simply off the table. Second, typing a purchase in takes a few seconds at the moment you are spending, which is the only moment the number can still change your decision. Imported transactions arrive later, when the decision is already made. If you spend deliberately and just want an accurate record, sync is better and you should use it.

Does Envelope Budget work on Android or the web?

No. It is an iPhone app only, with a home-screen and lock-screen widget and a Live Activity. There is no Android version, no web app, and no Mac app. If you or your partner needs any of those, YNAB covers all three and this comparison ends there. We would rather you find that out here than after a purchase.
