Envelope Budget vs Monarch Money

Monarch Money is a paid subscription platform built on connected accounts, covering budgeting alongside net worth and investment tracking, with partner collaboration and apps on iOS, Android and web. Envelope Budget is an iPhone-only manual-entry envelope app with no sync, no investment tracking and no shared budget. Choose Monarch for whole-finances visibility; choose envelopes if your problem is the moment of spending.

Scope versus focus

We make Envelope Budget, so this is an interested comparison, and we lose on features here by a wide margin. Monarch is a whole-finances dashboard: connected accounts, budgeting, net worth over time, investment balances, and a way to collaborate with a partner or an advisor, available on iPhone, Android and the web. We are one tool for one job on one platform. Envelopes govern the money that passes through your hands each month. We do not track investments, we do not compute net worth, and there is nothing in this page hinting that we will. If you want a single place that shows everything you own and owe, that is a category of product and we are not in it.

When a syncing platform genuinely beats us

Here is the fair rule, stated without hedging. If you hold several accounts across a few institutions, have brokerage balances that move on their own, and share your finances with a partner who needs the same view, a syncing platform is the right instrument and manual entry will lose. Typing every purchase from six cards into a phone is tedious, and tedium is how budgets die. Automatic import also catches what you forget: the annual renewal, the charge you meant to cancel, the transfer you made and did not record. A tool that is complete without your effort beats a tool that is accurate only while your discipline holds. That is not a concession we make reluctantly; it is simply true for that reader.

When a dashboard answers too late

The counter-case is narrow and specific. A dashboard is reviewed, usually weekly or monthly. If the question that keeps costing you money is whether you can afford something right now, standing in a store or hovering over a checkout button, a weekly review answers after the fact every single time. Envelope budgeting exists to move that answer earlier: you assign your take-home pay in advance, and the remaining balance in the relevant envelope is the answer to the question. Ours sits on the iPhone home screen and lock screen as a widget, with a Live Activity that keeps it visible while you are out. That is the entire argument for this kind of app, and if it does not describe your problem, it is not an argument at all.

What we do not do, stated plainly

No bank connection of any kind, so nothing imports and you log every purchase yourself. No Android, no web, no Mac. No investment or net worth tracking. No shared budget: two phones cannot hold one envelope set, so a partner cannot edit alongside you. No automatic bill detection. If several of those are dealbreakers, you already have your answer. Current Plus pricing lives on our comparison page rather than here, so it cannot go stale in a page nobody remembers to update; the App Store listing is always authoritative. We will not quote Monarch's price because prices change and a stale figure would be worse than no figure; check their site.

Mapping a Monarch budget onto envelopes

If you keep Monarch and want envelopes only where they earn their keep, do not duplicate the whole category list. Open your last three months of category budgets and find the two or three where you exceeded the plan repeatedly. Those are the categories where the decision happens in the moment, which is exactly where envelopes work and reports do not. Make one envelope for each, funded with a realistic amount rather than the amount you wish were true, and log only those purchases. Everything else stays where it is, tracked automatically. Running three envelopes on top of a dashboard is a legitimate setup, and it is a lot more likely to survive than a full second budget.

Common questions

Can I use Monarch and an envelope app together?

Yes, and for a lot of people it is the sensible arrangement. The dashboard handles completeness, accounts, net worth and the record of what happened. Envelopes handle the two or three discretionary categories where you actually lose money, because those need a limit visible before you pay rather than a report after. The cost is duplicated logging for those categories and paying for two things. If after two months the envelopes have not changed a spending decision, drop them.

Does Envelope Budget track net worth or investments?

No. There is no account connection, so there is nothing to read balances from, and no manual net worth feature either. It tracks money you assign to envelopes and the purchases you log against them, plus savings goals you fund yourself. If net worth is a number you want to watch, use a platform built for it. Trying to maintain a net worth figure by hand in a budgeting app is a chore nobody sustains past the second month.

My partner needs to see the budget too. What now?

Then a collaboration-capable platform is the right pick, and Monarch supports working with a partner while we do not. We have no accounts, no sync and no shared budget, so two phones cannot edit one envelope set. The workaround some couples use with us is running the household envelopes on one phone and holding a short weekly review together, which only works if one person is genuinely willing to do the logging. If that person does not exist in your household, do not pick us.

Is manual entry realistic if I use several cards?

It depends on how many purchases you make, not how many cards you hold. Fifteen purchases a week is a couple of minutes of typing spread across the week and most people can sustain it. Fifty is not. If your spending is high-volume across many cards, automatic import is the practical choice and you should take it. The other option, which nobody likes hearing, is to spend from one card so both the logging and the picture get simpler.
